Drone Survey Services in North Dakota
Northern Drone is a North Dakota company. We are headquartered in West Fargo and fly the whole state as home ground: the Red River Valley, the Missouri River and the coal country around it, the Bakken, and the farm and wind counties in between. LiDAR mapping, drone-based GPR, bathymetric surveys, stockpile volumetrics, agricultural surveys, thermal inspection and 3D laser scanning, flown by an FAA Part 107 certified team with $5M liability coverage and data back within 72 hours.
Work That Fits the State
- LiDAR mapping — bare-earth terrain for drainage and pre-construction design on the flattest, wettest ground in the country, and corridor surveys for the transmission lines, pipelines and county roads that cross it. See vegetation management LiDAR for utility corridors.
- Drone-based GPR — bedrock and till depth for foundation design, buried utility screening on campuses and plant sites, and pipeline depth of cover across the gathering and transmission systems of the Williston Basin.
- Bathymetric surveys — flooded gravel pits, stormwater basins, reservoirs and slough crossings mapped without a boat, with volumes and sediment thickness for dewatering, dredging and permit work.
- Stockpile volumetrics — auditable month-end volumes for the aggregate producers, sand and scoria pits, salt sheds and grain and sugar piles that run on a North Dakota calendar.
- Agricultural surveys — calibrated NDVI and NDRE across sugar beet, corn, soybean, wheat, canola and potato ground at 1,000+ acres a day, from the Valley to the Drift Prairie.
- Thermal inspection — radiometric roof, electrical and solar surveys for commercial buildings, substations and the solar projects coming online across the state.
Why a North Dakota Crew
Most drone survey work in North Dakota is quoted from Minneapolis, Denver or a national broker who subcontracts it. We are the operator, we live here, and the state is our same-region schedule: the Fargo–Moorhead metro, Grand Forks and Jamestown without a mobilization line item, Bismarck–Mandan and Minot as a day trip, and the Bakken and the Badlands as planned deployments we sequence into multi-site trips.
We also know what North Dakota does to a survey plan. Spring is a flood season before it is a field season. Wind cancels more flights than rain. Section lines are the road network, and half the sites worth measuring are a mile from pavement. Winter is not a dead season for LiDAR; it is the one time the ground under the canopy and the bottom of a drained pit are fully visible. We schedule around all of it, and we hold the LAANC and FAA authorizations for the controlled airspace at Fargo, Grand Forks, Bismarck and Minot before we leave the shop. Northern Drone is a drone data-collection firm, not a licensed land surveying firm; when a project requires deliverables certified by a Professional Land Surveyor or Engineer, we partner with licensed professionals who review and stamp the final product.
Service Area Across North Dakota
Same-region scheduling covers the Fargo–West Fargo–Moorhead metro, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Wahpeton, Valley City and the Red River Valley. Regular statewide deployments reach Bismarck–Mandan, Minot, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Williston and the Bakken. Beyond the state line we fly Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana and nationwide.
North Dakota Drone Survey FAQ
Fargo–Moorhead, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Wahpeton and the Red River Valley are same-region scheduling with no long-distance mobilization. Bismarck–Mandan, Minot, Devils Lake, Dickinson and Williston are quoted with travel as one transparent line item, and multi-site programs across the state are sequenced into a single deployment to spread it.
Eastern North Dakota sites are typically scheduled within days of an approved quote, weather and wind permitting. Western deployments usually run inside two weeks, faster for time-critical work such as flood response or a pit that has to be measured before a sale closes. Data delivery follows our standard 72-hour turnaround, 36 hours with rush processing.
Yes, with planning. Fargo, Grand Forks, Bismarck and Minot all have controlled airspace that we handle through LAANC or FAA authorization before mobilizing. Grand Forks and Minot Air Force Bases have restricted airspace and base-specific coordination that we build into the schedule; sites inside those boundaries are flown only with the required approvals in hand.
Yes. Well pads, gathering pipeline corridors, depth of cover, saltwater disposal sites and reclamation surfaces are regular drone survey work, and airborne GPR lets us profile buried lines and cover depth without a potholing crew. We follow the operator’s site safety requirements and coordinate access with the company man before any flight.

When a North Dakota project requires deliverables certified by a Professional Land Surveyor or Engineer, we perform the field acquisition in partnership with licensed professionals who review and stamp the final product.
