LOCAL SERVICE — BISMARCK / MANDAN

Drone Survey Services in Bismarck, North Dakota

Bismarck–Mandan is three hours west of our West Fargo base on I-94, close enough that we treat it as a day trip rather than a deployment. It is also where North Dakota’s energy, utility and state infrastructure decisions get made, and the sites that go with them: Missouri River crossings and riverfront construction, the coal and power corridor north of the city, the refinery and rail yards in Mandan, and the state and county road programs run from the capital. LiDAR, airborne GPR, bathymetry, stockpiles and thermal, flown by a North Dakota crew.

WHAT WE FLY IN BISMARCK

Work We Do Around Bismarck

  • LiDAR mapping — pre-construction terrain and drainage models on the river bluffs and bottomland, corridor LiDAR for the transmission lines radiating out of the Bismarck–Mandan area, and road and site design surfaces for the capital’s public works programs.
  • Bathymetric surveys — Missouri River edge and backwater depth mapping, sediment surveys on boat ramps, intakes and marinas, and flooded gravel pits along the river terraces measured without a boat crew.
  • Drone-based GPR — bedrock and till depth for foundations on the river terraces, buried utility screening on state campuses and plant sites, and depth of cover on the pipelines that cross the Missouri.
  • Stockpile volumetrics — aggregate, sand, salt and coal-handling volumes for producers and contractors on both sides of the river, with the auditable per-pile report a month-end close needs.
  • Thermal inspection — roof moisture and electrical surveys on commercial and state buildings, and substation and solar inspections for the utilities headquartered here.

Why a North Dakota Crew in Bismarck

The Missouri River is the reason most Bismarck–Mandan survey work exists and the reason it is hard. Bluff and bottomland terrain changes elevation fast, the river moves its own sandbars, and the Corps-managed water levels change what is measurable from one week to the next. LiDAR gives the terrain under the cottonwoods along the bank; bathymetry gives the channel and the backwaters; one mobilization gives both on the same coordinate system.

Bismarck Municipal Airport has Class D airspace that reaches over much of the city, so most urban sites need LAANC authorization. We hold it before we drive out. For energy sites north toward Washburn and Underwood, and refinery and rail work in Mandan, we follow the operator’s safety program and coordinate access ahead of the flight. Data is processed in West Fargo and back within 72 hours.

Bismarck Drone Survey FAQ

Do you charge travel to Bismarck?

Bismarck–Mandan is about 190 miles from our base, which we quote as a single transparent travel line rather than a buried day rate. For a one-day site it is modest; for multi-site programs along the Missouri or in the coal corridor, we sequence the stops into one trip so it is shared across them.

Can you fly near Bismarck Municipal Airport?

Yes. BIS has Class D controlled airspace covering a large part of the city. We obtain LAANC authorization for the altitude block each site needs as part of mission planning, so the flight is approved before we arrive. Sites outside the Class D boundary, including most of Mandan and the river corridor south of town, are uncontrolled.

Can you survey the Missouri River itself?

Yes, within reason. Backwaters, boat ramps, intakes, marinas and the shallow edges of the channel are standard drone bathymetry. The main navigation channel at high flow is a different survey with different equipment, and we say so at scoping rather than overpromise.

Do you provide surveys stamped by a North Dakota-licensed surveyor?

Northern Drone is a drone data-collection firm, not a licensed land surveying firm. When a Bismarck project requires deliverables certified by a Professional Land Surveyor or Engineer, we perform the field acquisition in partnership with licensed professionals who review and stamp the final product.
