LOCAL SERVICE — DES MOINES METRO

Drone Survey Services in Des Moines, Iowa

Des Moines is about 480 miles from West Fargo, a full day on I-29 and I-35, so we fly it as a planned deployment and we fill the trip. There is plenty to fill it with. The metro has been one of the fastest-growing in the Midwest for a decade: subdivisions and warehouses pushing out through West Des Moines, Waukee, Ankeny and Altoona, some of the largest data-center campuses in the country, the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers and their levees running through the middle of it, and the corn and soybean counties that start at the city limits. LiDAR, airborne GPR, stockpiles, bathymetry, thermal and agricultural surveys, by a Northern Plains crew.

WHAT WE FLY IN DES MOINES

Work We Do Around Des Moines

  • LiDAR mapping — pre-construction terrain and drainage models for subdivisions, industrial parks and data-center campuses, floodplain, levee and channel surfaces along the Des Moines, Raccoon and Skunk Rivers, and corridor LiDAR for the transmission lines feeding the metro.
  • Drone-based GPR — bedrock and glacial till depth for foundation design, buried utility screening on redevelopment, campus and hospital sites, and depth of cover on the pipelines crossing Polk, Dallas and Warren Counties.
  • Stockpile volumetrics — limestone, sand, gravel and recycled aggregate volumes at the producers and contractor yards around the metro, and grain and distillers grain piles at the elevators and ethanol plants in the surrounding counties.
  • Bathymetric surveys — flooded quarries, borrow pits, detention basins and river backwaters mapped without a boat, with capacity and sediment thickness for stormwater, dredging and permit work.
  • Agricultural surveys — calibrated NDVI and NDRE across the corn and soybean ground of central Iowa, plant counts and stand assessments early, and plot-scale data for the seed and input trials run out of Ames and the metro.
  • Thermal inspection — roof moisture, envelope and electrical surveys on warehouses, data-center and institutional buildings, and solar and substation inspection.

Why a Planned Deployment in Des Moines

Des Moines builds on floodplain and glacial till, and both of them punish a design that started from old terrain. The rivers have moved through the 2008 and 2018 floods since the state’s LiDAR was flown (and 1993 before it), levees have been raised and channels reworked, and a site plan drawn on that data can be a foot off where it matters. We fly current, RTK-positioned LiDAR with independent checkpoints and deliver it in the project datum, so the engineer has the terrain as it is this season. For data-center and industrial sites, the same deployment gives a pre-construction surface, a progress survey and the stockpile and earthwork volumes that settle pay applications.

Des Moines International has Class C airspace over the south side of the metro, which we handle through LAANC authorization before mobilizing; Ankeny and the northern suburbs are mostly outside it. Because the drive is long, we schedule the trip with a weather window and several sites, so a windy day costs a reshuffle rather than a second mobilization. Data is processed in West Fargo and back within 72 hours. Northern Drone is a drone data-collection firm, not a licensed land surveying firm; when a project requires certified deliverables, we partner with licensed professionals who review and stamp the final product.

Des Moines Drone Survey FAQ

Do you charge travel to Des Moines?

Yes, as one transparent line. Des Moines is about 480 miles from our base, so we fly it as a planned deployment and batch sites: a subdivision, a quarry, a corridor and a floodplain survey can share one trip. The more that goes on the trip, the smaller the travel share on each site, and the quote shows it as a single line rather than a buried day rate.

Can you fly near Des Moines International?

Yes. DSM has Class C controlled airspace covering the south side of the metro. We obtain LAANC authorization for the altitude block each site needs during mission planning, so the flight is approved before we arrive. Sites outside the Class C boundary, including most of Ankeny, Altoona and the northern suburbs, are uncontrolled.

Can you survey an active data-center or industrial construction site?

Yes. We coordinate with the general contractor, fly around active work without stopping it, and deliver surfaces, progress orthomosaics and earthwork and stockpile volumes in the project coordinate system so they tie directly to the design and the pay application. Repeat flights give a dated record of progress.

Do you provide surveys stamped by an Iowa-licensed surveyor?

Northern Drone is a drone data-collection firm, not a licensed land surveying firm. When a Des Moines project requires deliverables certified by a Professional Land Surveyor or Engineer, we perform the field acquisition in partnership with licensed professionals who review and stamp the final product.
